Warning: Do not use this point on pregnant women.
Name: Hoku or Joining of the Valleys (Large Intestine 4)
Location: On the top of the hand, on the web where the thumb and the index finger meet. (See the red dot on the hand in the photo.)
To hold: Squeeze the point by putting your thumb on the point, and your index finger on the palm side of your hand. Make small circular motions with your thumb until you feel the point; it is tender on many people.Make sure that the hand that is holding the point is relaxed. The demo photo above shows you how to hold the point, but the hands are a little tense; the second photo, on the right, shows you the hands relaxed, which is how you want to do it.
Hold for 10 or 15 seconds initially, until you figure out what works for you. You can hold for a few minutes, but make sure that the holding hand does not get tense or tired out. Release gently if you feel any acute pain.
This is a wonderful point. It is effective for relieving so many discomforts, including headaches, constipation, insomnia, stress, shoulder and neck tension.
You are encouraged you to seek the advice of a qualified health care provider for questions about a medical condition.

You know, I have actually done this technique for well over 25 years. However, I had no idea what it was called or that it helped with the other things you listed. In fact, I don’t even remember where I learned it. All I knew was that it really helped with headaches.
One question: Why shouldn’t women who are pregnant do this?
Thanks for sharing.
Be well.

this pressure point stimulates contractions in pregnant women. it is suggested to induce labour this way if you are ready for that or to augment weak or ineffective contractions. i am 40 weeks plus 4 days pregnant and doing it for that purpose right now.
🙂

Thanks for the great question Beezner, and for sharing your experience with the point, Celia. Indeed, the Hoku point can stimulate contractions. Another way to think about it is that the point helps push things down, hence it’s great for addressing constipation, too. You only want to use it with a baby when it’s time for the baby to come down.
Celia, good luck with your birthing. The hoku point will also help you during labor. You can teach it to those who will assist you during labor, so they can hold the point for you.

Interesting.
Over some years I’ve realised that I seem to be quite sensitive to pressure on this point….
For me it promptly brings on menstruation – within a day or two. I’ve experimented & it even works reliably at the ‘wrong’ time in the cycle – but have tried to keep that to a minimum, as I’m not sure wether it’s detrimental…
I was just curios wether these effects have been experienced by anyone else, & maybe documented?
thanks,
Angharad

Hi there just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your post seem to
be running off the screen in Firefox. I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with internet browser compatibility but I thought I’d post to let you know.
The design and style look great though! Hope you get the issue fixed soon.
Many thanks
